San Miguel has a way of bringing people back to what matters—and for Ana Karla Aguilar, it became a place where purpose could take new shape.

For Ana Karla Aguilar, that journey began long before San Miguel. Originally from Guanajuato, she built her foundation in education, guided by a deep belief in its power to create opportunity in Mexico. Her path took her through Europe and South America, including time in Peru, where that focus only deepened.

When the opportunity arose to return to her home state and lead Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente—a home supporting girls in vulnerable situations—she stepped into the role of director. The work was meaningful and transformative, offering a new perspective on education and care, but also emotionally demanding. After several years, she felt ready for a shift.

What began as a pause became something more. She fell in love with the city—and soon after, a new opportunity appeared: a position at Recreo San Miguel. What she initially saw as a role in sales quickly revealed itself as something much deeper. Under the vision of founder Lisa Coleman, Recreo was not just a fashion brand, but a platform—one rooted in craftsmanship, culture, and connection.

Ana Karla immersed herself in this new world, learning textiles and design, while rediscovering her passion for education in a new form. Here, education extends beyond the classroom—it lives in creating opportunities for artisans, seamstresses, and team members to grow, contribute, and see their work valued.

She became a bridge within the company—connecting creatives with leadership, and navigating the cultural nuances between Mexican artisans and an international team.

In many ways, her role reflects what makes San Miguel so unique: the collaboration between cultures and the possibilities that emerge from it.

Now nearly a decade into life in San Miguel, she continues to grow—personally and professionally. From ongoing studies in Europe, including plans to further explore styling and runway work, to the everyday inspiration she finds in the city, her path continues to evolve. For her, San Miguel offers everything she once sought in larger cities—opportunity, creativity, connection, and community—while remaining deeply personal.

Because that’s what San Miguel does. It connects, it creates opportunity, and it opens doors you never expected.

What first brought you to San Miguel—and what made you stay?

I came to San Miguel to collaborate with Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente. What made me stay was the deep sense of community that exists here.

It was a transformative experience to witness how Mexicans and foreigners come together with empathy, generosity, and commitment to make a real difference in the lives of these girls. In San Miguel, humanity is present in every gesture. Support becomes action, and purpose can take shape every day.

What are you building, nurturing, or contributing to here?

I’m building a bridge between artisanal luxury, Mexican identity, and community.

Through my work, I seek to bring value to garments that carry history, quality, and soul—while elevating the talent of Mexican artisans, especially women from Guanajuato and across Latin America.

I’m also deeply inspired by the possibility of connecting this creative richness with the generosity of the international community that lives in San Miguel. For me, it’s about creating real connections between women—mothers, artists, and creators—so we can recognize one another, support each other, and grow together.

How do you connect with or support the community?

I connect with the community by creating opportunities for talented women—especially local seamstresses and creators.

For me, supporting means opening space for them to develop their own ideas, participate actively in the creative process, and see their work reflected in what we build at Recreo San Miguel. It’s about including, listening, and building together—recognizing the value and creativity each woman brings to the project.

What does a typical day in San Miguel look like for you?

My mornings are slow and intentional. I like to take time to have breakfast, organize my thoughts, and do small things that help me feel grounded—like walking my dog, Mole.

Walking through the centro on my way to work always inspires me—the colors of the streets, the architecture, the light, and the unique energy of San Miguel.

During the day, I love the balance between work and community: connecting with clients, greeting neighbors, seeing the flower vendors pass by, welcoming new visitors, and feeling the vibrant life that fills the city.

What has San Miguel given you—and what do you hope to give back?

San Miguel has given me the ability to believe again in the value of community.

It has taught me that growth doesn’t have to be an individual path—that when there is genuine human connection, powerful things can happen.

What I hope to give back is everything this city has given me: growth, opportunity, inspiration, and a platform to continue building something meaningful. I hope my work can open doors for others—especially women—to find real opportunities for development and expression here.

Fast Five

One word that describes San Miguel: Captivating.

Your favorite place to gather with friends: A cozy café in the centro, like Kibok—where good conversations, familiar faces, and a sense of home always come together.

The season you love most in town: The beginning of spring, when the jacarandas bloom and the city transforms into something even more magical.

A local business, cause, or space you love supporting: Any person or organization with a purpose-driven project—those are always worth supporting.

A view in San Miguel you never take for granted: The view coming down from Garita street. It always reminds me how special it is to live here.
