If you had told me ten years ago that I would curate a refined, versatile wardrobe while living in San Miguel, I would have been in complete disbelief. As we began our transition to life here, one of my earliest considerations was a practical one: Where will I shop for clothes? What initially felt like a limitation has revealed itself as one of the most rewarding luxuries of living in this extraordinary city.

San Miguel has introduced me to a world of designers and artisans whose work reflects intention, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal. These are pieces created to be worn, lived in, and cherished—far removed from fast fashion and fleeting trends. Whether dressing for an elegant evening, a holiday celebration, or a quietly sophisticated dinner at home, I consistently find clothing that feels personal, elevated, and unmistakably special.

Recreo: Effortless Silhouettes, Enduring Elegance

One of the first boutiques to leave a lasting impression was Recreo, discovered when a friend invited me to an event during one of my early visits. I was immediately drawn to the brand’s effortless silhouettes and exquisite fabrics—clothing that feels both relaxed and refined. Over time, I’ve watched designer Lisa Coleman thoughtfully expand the Recreo collection while remaining true to its understated elegance. The use of locally sourced textiles speaks to a commitment to sustainable production, adding another layer of meaning to each piece.

Several Recreo designs have become essentials in my wardrobe, including a beautifully crafted poncho, a halter, and a selection of blouses that rotate seamlessly from day to evening—proof that true luxury lies in versatility and longevity.

Casa R: Statement Pieces with a San Miguel Soul

Another indispensable destination is Casa R, where owner Josefina Carballido curates a striking collection of clothing and accessories by some of Mexico’s most talented designers. Josefina’s discerning eye and personal approach make each visit feel like a private styling session—thoughtful, intuitive, and deeply personal. The experience is further enhanced by the adjoining Lalo Tequila tasting room, whose relaxed charm adds an unexpected and distinctly San Miguel layer to a visit.

Casa R is my trusted source for statement pieces and special occasions. From sculptural earrings to impeccably cut tops, the selection pairs beautifully with my wardrobe staples—especially my well-loved collection of jeans. Designers such as Sofia Simon, Maria Sousa, Nicoletta and Karina Gonzáles are consistently represented. Katharine wore a Maria Sousa skirt to her rehearsal dinner, and I wore Sofia Simon to a wedding in Brazil—pieces that traveled effortlessly and carried the essence of San Miguel far beyond its borders.

A non-negotiable addition to any curated closet is a handbag by Oriana Rodriguez from Guadalajara. Since 2010, Oriana has been creating statement leather handbags handcrafted by Mexican artisans, each one balancing modern design with exceptional craftsmanship. My personal favorite is the Amari Mini Mezcilla—timeless, versatile, and unmistakably special.

Sartoria CB7: Italian Design, Made in Mexico

Through my continued exploration of San Miguel’s fashion landscape, I discovered Sartoria CB7, a boutique that immediately captivated me. Designed and owned by Carmen Basanisi, Sartoria CB7 offers Italian-inspired designs impeccably made in Mexico. The collection is timeless and sophisticated, celebrating clean lines, beautiful tailoring, and thoughtful detail. Stepping inside feels like bringing a touch of Europe to San Miguel. It was here that I found the perfect little black dress—an essential that transitions effortlessly from formal evenings to casual days paired with sneakers. Carmen’s talent extends beyond design; her innate sense of styling allows her to complete each look with beautifully curated accessories, ensuring every piece feels intentional and uniquely personal.

A Slower, More Intentional Way of Dressing

San Miguel has redefined my understanding of luxury fashion. Here, elegance is unforced, style is deeply personal, and every garment tells a story. Getting dressed is no longer about keeping up—it’s about slowing down, choosing well, and embracing a way of life where beauty is woven into the everyday. And while these are a few of my most cherished discoveries, they are only the beginning. San Miguel continues to reveal its treasures, and I look forward to sharing many more of these hidden gems in the posts to come
