When we first introduced Julie, she shared the story of how she unexpectedly found a new life in San Miguel. Now she's sharing another chapter of that journey. One of the greatest joys of living here is discovering the incredible local food—from bustling markets and artisan producers to neighborhood specialty shops that inspire everyday cooking. In this personal blog, Julie reflects on how shopping, cooking, and entertaining in San Miguel have become some of her favorite ways to connect with the city, the culture, and the people who call it home.

A New Way of Shopping
One of the most grounding and unexpectedly joyful parts of settling into life in San Miguel de Allende has been embracing the rhythm of cooking and shopping like a local.
What once felt like a simple errand—grabbing groceries—has transformed into a sensory experience, one that connects you deeply to the culture, the people, and the pace of this extraordinary town.

For me, it often begins on Saturdays at the Organic Market at Mercado Sano—a weekly ritual I’ve come to treasure. Local vendors arrive with tables full of vibrant produce, golden jars of honey, freshly baked breads, and rich, complex mole pastes. It’s the kind of place where inspiration happens naturally; you don’t plan meals in advance, you discover them as you wander.
Mercado Sano itself is also a staple throughout the week (Monday through Saturday), offering beautifully sourced local produce, organic meats, and specialty items that make everyday cooking feel elevated yet effortless. And on Thursdays, I make it a point to visit China Berry Farms when they come into town along Salida a Celaya from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Their produce is exceptional—fresh, seasonal, and thoughtfully grown. You can also find them at the Lanza Fuegos Farmer’s Market, which adds another layer of charm with its relaxed atmosphere, live music, and the opportunity to linger over a casual lunch.
Favorite Stops for Entertaining

When it comes to entertaining—or simply indulging a little—there are a few places I never miss. Luna de Queso tienda is my go-to for fresh spices, especially those harder-to-find varieties, and I never leave without a curated selection of cheeses, olives, and their irresistible homemade crackers. La Estrella is another favorite, particularly for fresh greens and what I consider some of the best local cheese in town. We recently featured founder Cristina Gerez in our San Miguel Women series, and her passion for local food shines through in everything she creates. Their black peppercorn cheddar is unforgettable, and the fresh goat cheese with tomatoes has become a staple when entertaining.
No dinner gathering is complete without a stop at Panio, where I pick up perfectly baked baguettes—simple, elegant, and always a crowd favorite—along with a few specialty pantry items to round out the table. We also recently featured Sandra Vázquez in our San Miguel Women, celebrating the vision and craftsmanship that have made Panio such an iconic part of San Miguel's culinary scene. And for something truly special, I always keep a bottle of olive oil from the vineyard Cuna de Tierra on hand. It’s that good—rich, smooth, and honestly, something I could drink on its own.

Then there’s La Factoría, whose owner, Isabella Castro Vera, was also part of the San Miguel Women series. This is where I find the absolute best Greek yogurt in town, made from their own cows. Their cheeses and meats are equally beautiful, and it’s one of those places that quietly elevates everything you bring home from it.
And while so much of my shopping leans local and seasonal, there’s also something to be said for the ease and comfort of modern conveniences—and that’s where City Market comes in. It’s an incredible grocery store that offers a completely different, yet equally enjoyable experience. While it doesn’t focus on organic or locally sourced goods in the same way, it more than makes up for it with variety and accessibility. Their selection is expansive—especially the Italian pasta aisle, which I never skip—and it’s a joy to know you can find those familiar staples and specialty imports whenever you want them. Beyond shopping, it’s also a place to linger a bit: grab a coffee, enjoy a gelato, or sit down for lunch at one of the in-store restaurants. It adds a layer of ease to daily life that feels both practical and indulgent.
Cooking with What the Market Gives You

Cooking in San Miguel becomes less about following recipes and more about responding to what you’ve discovered that day. It’s intuitive, seasonal, and deeply satisfying. Meals feel fresher, more intentional, and often turn into moments of connection—shared over a table with friends, good wine, and stories that stretch long into the evening.
Personally, I’ve found a new sense of creativity in my own kitchen since living here.
Recently, I challenged myself to make six different ragùs—each one a little experiment in flavor, technique, and patience. It’s part of a larger rhythm I’ve fallen into: I truly love cooking at home, and this year alone I’ve made over 50 new recipes, alongside my tried-and-true standbys. There’s something deeply satisfying about pushing myself, trying something new, and seeing it come together.
Learning the Soul of Mexican Cuisine
And now, I feel a natural shift happening—one that feels both exciting and deeply personal. Living in Mexico has awakened a desire to go beyond simply cooking here, and instead to truly understand the soul of the cuisine. To slow down and learn the traditions, the techniques passed through generations, the stories woven into each dish. From the patience of a well-made mole to the artistry of handmade tortillas, it’s a journey that feels less like a goal and more like a calling.
Because in many ways, this is what San Miguel has given me—not just beautiful ingredients or inspiring markets, but a renewed sense of curiosity and creativity in my own kitchen.
Cooking has become more than something I love to do; it’s become a way to connect—to the culture, to the community, and to the rhythm of everyday life here.
More Than a Meal
And perhaps that’s the real magic of it all. What begins as a trip to the market, a loaf of bread, a wedge of cheese, or a handful of herbs, slowly turns into something much more meaningful. A meal becomes a memory. A recipe becomes a story. And over time, without even realizing it, you find yourself not just living in San Miguel—but truly belonging to it.
