For some, San Miguel isn’t a destination—it’s where their story begins.
For Isabela Castro Vera, San Miguel de Allende has always been home. Having arrived at just nine years old, she experienced a childhood she describes as magical—one that would later inspire her to build her life here and give her own daughters that same sense of wonder, culture, and connection.
Today, through her work with Grupo México Real, Isabela is helping shape the experience of San Miguel for both visitors and locals alike. Her projects—including Hacienda El Santuario, Agua Bendita, Tierra y Amor, and La Factoría—reflect a thoughtful approach to hospitality, one that blends tradition, nature, and a deep respect for the land. Tierra y Amor, originally founded by her mother, is especially meaningful to her family’s vision of sustainability, wellness, and connection to nature. From boutique stays rooted in the city’s history to countryside spaces designed for gathering, wellness, and regeneration, her work expands what San Miguel can offer while staying true to its essence.
Rooted in a family legacy of giving back, Isabela’s approach extends beyond business. It’s about creating opportunities, supporting education, and building something meaningful for the next generation—while continuing to contribute to the city that shaped her.

What first brought you to San Miguel—and what made you decide to stay?
I first arrived in San Miguel when I was nine years old. My childhood here was magical, and from a young age I always knew I wanted my daughters to experience that same kind of upbringing—surrounded by culture, beauty, and a strong sense of community.
What are you building, nurturing, or contributing to in San Miguel today?
I focus on hospitality—creating businesses that bring more options to the city and help make San Miguel a more complete and attractive destination for visitors.

How do you connect with or support the community?
I approach everything with the idea of building and working as a team. More than 50 years ago, my mother founded an organization dedicated to providing education to underserved children. It continues to operate today and, thanks to years of effort, support, and donations from many people, now serves 550 children and has impacted more than 57,000 lives.
Through Tierra y Amor and La Factoría, we also focus on regenerating our land and offering healthier, more sustainable products.
Tierra y Amor offers a quiet escape into nature. From guided walks to a honey museum, every detail is designed to connect guests with the environment in a thoughtful and authentic way.
Within our companies, we invest in the growth of our team. One of the ways we do this is by supporting school supplies for the children of our employees—we strongly believe that the future of Mexico lies in education.
We also love being part of San Miguel’s social and cultural life, participating in local events and traditions that make this city so unique.
What does a typical day in San Miguel look like for you?
It might start with coffee and fresh bread, followed by a walk through the centro. I love visiting museums or exhibitions, shopping for local crafts, taking a workshop, or heading out to a vineyard. Sometimes it’s as simple as stopping for an agua fresca at a samaritana stand and sitting in the Jardín. And of course, ending the day with dinner at one of the many incredible restaurants in the city.
What has San Miguel given you—and what do you hope to give back?
San Miguel has given me a quality of life and joy. I hope to give back by continuing to create, contribute, and support the city in a meaningful way.

Fast Five
One word that describes San Miguel: It’s hard to choose just one—San Miguel is so many things to me: home, unique, intense, authentic, joyful, generous, and full of celebration. If I had to choose, I would say surprising.
Your favorite place to gather with friends: The Jardín—the heart of the city.
The season or celebration you love most in town: All of them! I love the traditional festivities: La Candelaria flower fair in the spring, Viernes de Dolores during Holy Week, Día de los Locos in the summer, La Alborada and Día de Muertos in the fall, and the Posadas during the holidays.
A local business, cause, or space you love supporting: Fundación Mujeres en Cambio, which empowers girls and young women through education by providing scholarships for junior high, high school, and university. I also love the organic market TOSMA, a beautiful space that brings together local producers committed to sustainable practices, community, and environmental responsibility.
A view in San Miguel you never take for granted: Any excuse to sit at Hortus with a meal or tea and watch life unfold in the Jardín. I also love the views from Instituto Allende Casa Museo—a new museum honoring the city’s rich art history—along with the natural beauty of El Charco del Ingenio and the hot springs in Atotonilco just outside of town.
