Building Our Dream in San Miguel de Allende

For most homeowners, there’s something undeniably romantic about the idea of building a home—stepping out of someone else’s vision and into one shaped entirely by your own life experiences and creative choices. After nearly four decades of marriage, my husband Stuart and I were fortunate to finally take that step in the magical city of San Miguel de Allende.

As longtime visitors—and eventually homeowners—of San Miguel, we had already immersed ourselves in the artistry of its architecture and its deep reverence for nature. We were continually inspired by the light, the textures, and the thoughtful design woven into every home. The sheer variety was transformative.

Over time, we began to see not only the possibilities in construction, but something more personal—the opportunity for creative and personal growth.

That realization ultimately led us to purchase land and begin the journey of designing and building a home of our own.

What we didn’t fully understand at the time was that building in San Miguel wouldn’t simply be a project—it would become an experience that would challenge us, shape us, and ultimately reward us in ways we never expected.

The Reality Behind the Dream

Like any build, there are moments that test your patience—and ours was no exception.

Timelines stretched in ways we hadn’t anticipated. Plans evolved, sometimes more than once. What initially felt straightforward often required flexibility and a willingness to adapt.

We quickly learned that building in San Miguel comes with its own rhythm—one that doesn’t always align with what we were accustomed to.

But somewhere along the way, our perspective began to shift. We started to understand the nuances of cultural differences not as obstacles, but as an integral part of the experience. Instead of resisting that rhythm, we learned to embrace it.

We let go of rigid expectations and began to trust the process. And in doing so, we came to appreciate that what was being created wasn’t delayed—it was being thoughtfully and carefully crafted.

Designing in Collaboration: A Creative Evolution

What surprised us most throughout this process was how organically both the design and the relationships behind it evolved.

From the beginning, we weren’t simply executing a plan—we were part of a creative dialogue. Our architects, contractors, interior and landscape designers, and the many skilled artisans involved became true collaborators. Each brought not only expertise, but perspective—helping us interpret and refine our vision in a way that felt both personal and deeply connected to San Miguel de Allende.

Rather than making every decision upfront, we allowed ourselves to be inspired along the way. A material discovered in a workshop might influence an entire room. A single piece—furniture, tile, or architectural detail—could shift our thinking and lead us somewhere even better than we had imagined.

There is a genuine pride here in creating something meaningful, and we felt that in every step of the process. What emerged was not just a well-designed home, but one shaped through collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment to craftsmanship.

Where Craftsmanship Became the Heart of Our Home

Very early on, we realized this home would be unlike anything we had experienced before.

Instead of selecting from catalogs or choosing pre-made elements, we found ourselves immersed in a world where nearly everything could be created by hand. Details that might once have felt secondary became central to the experience. Hand-forged ironwork began to feel more like sculpture than structure, while carved cantera stone introduced a sense of history and permanence. Custom woodwork and furniture brought warmth and individuality into every room.

Some of our most memorable moments came through designing handcrafted tiles—selecting colors, patterns, and finishes that would ultimately define entire spaces within our home. What began as small decisions became some of the most personal and visually striking elements we live with every day.

What moved us most was the level of care behind it all. Every detail felt intentional. Every piece carried a story.

There is something incredibly meaningful about knowing that so much of our home was created within the region we now call home—by artisans who have spent generations refining their craft.

Collected Beauty: Filling Our Home with Story

As the structure of our home began to take shape, so did another layer we hadn’t fully anticipated—the joy of collecting.

Living in San Miguel de Allende opened the door to artistry from across Mexico. We found ourselves drawn to pieces that were not simply decorative, but deeply meaningful—handwoven textiles, ceramics, and objects created by families who have passed their craft down through generations.

Over time, decorating became something much more personal. It became a process of curating—of choosing pieces that carried history, intention, and a sense of place.

Being surrounded by such an extraordinary gallery scene made it almost impossible not to bring that creative energy into our home. These layers ultimately transformed our house into a home.

The Emotional Journey and the Reward

Of course, there were moments of frustration—there always are in a process like this. But those moments were balanced by creativity, discovery, and a deepening appreciation for what we were building, not just physically, but emotionally. In the end, this was never simply about constructing a house, but about creating a space that reflects who we are, what we value, and the life we are building together.

All the waiting, the decisions, and even the unexpected turns have become part of what makes this home so special to us—not imperfections, but layers; not challenges, but chapters woven into the fabric of the home itself.

Looking back, building our home in San Miguel de Allende was so much more than we ever imagined.

And in many ways, it feels like just the beginning. There are still so many artisans, galleries, and hidden gems that continue to inspire us—and I look forward to sharing more of them with you.
